Materia Medica
Materia Medica is the study of the remedies used in Homoeopathic treatment. A good prescription by a homoeopath mainly depends upon the case receiving, processing, and a sound knowledge of Homoeopathic Materia Medica.
As a core component of the undergraduate curriculum, the department ensures that students ac-quire a deep and comprehensive understanding of homeopathic remedies with the subject being systematically taught across all academic years of the BHMS course . The subject’s practical appli-cation is introduced in clinical settings from the first year itself, bridging theoretical knowledge with real world expertise .
The department aspires not only to equip the undergraduate students to understand materia medi-ca, but also develop a vision towards self-guided study and apply the knowledge in practice. This self-directed learning can ultimately lead to a critical approach of studying Materia Medica, thereby empowering evidence based practice and initiating the process of lifelong learning.
PG Department
It was one among the Departments in GHMC, Kozhikode to first start PG Course in 1991. The PG department aims to enable students in attainment of professional competency, to explore in-depth the potentials of homoeopathic medicines and their clinical applications. The Course intends to fa-cilitate the post graduates students to be rational thinkers, committed research scholars and pas-sionate teachers in homoeopathy, and be competent to provide professional services with empathy and a humane approach. Towards this end the department organizes regular case presentations,, journal clubs, seminars etc At present there are eight seats annually for the M.D. (Homoeopathy) Homoeopathic Materia Medica course. Over 150 successful candidates have completed the post graduate programme, many of whom have become esteemed practitioners, academicians and expert clinicians.
The department since its inception has maintained its reputation for producing highly competent professionals in the field. The founder Principal of GHMC Calicut, Dr. K.S Prakasam was a Professor of this department. Stalwarts of Homoeopathy in Kerala like Dr Abdul Lethif & Dr A Esmail Sait have led the department of Materia Medica of GHMC Kozhikode at various times during its illustri-ous history.

Clinical Services
- The Department has a fully fledged OPD (Medicine Unit I) which functions daily from 8 A.M to 1 p.m. Services provided include :
- ➜ Management of Acute diseases
- ➜ Management of Chronic Diseases – Curative & Palliative care
- It has a very busy IP section, with almost 400 admissions every year, giving adequate clinical exposure to the UG & PG students.
- The department conducts special OP in Paediatrics, every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 AM to 12.30 pm which ensures adequate care & attention to paediatric cases. Pediatric special OP caters to a wide range of acute and chronic pediatric disorders including neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, Autism, etc), Learning disability, Allergic disorders (Bronchial asthma, Allergic rhinitis, Atopic eczema), Nocturnal enuresis, Respiratory infections etc

Facilities for all round improvement of students at both undergraduate & post graduate level are available
- For the UG & PG students, a discussion room with projection equipment is available with the department.
- A well-stocked department Library with around 440 books, which serve as a resource for PG doctors and Faculty to attain advanced knowledge across all dimensions of their profession.
- Materia medica Museum displaying charts, specimens etc of around 50 drugs.
- Separate faculty rooms for Head of the Department, UG & PG faculty.
